Mary Magdalene & The Mother of God

Two_Figures - Image 1

Restoration of Two Figures – The Mother of God and Mary Magdalene – from the “Crucifixion of Christ” Composition, Late 18th Century These two figures are part of a carved icon featuring the Crucifixion with a central cross and four additional figures on either side. The faces of the Mother of God and Mary Magdalene were completely abraded down to the gesso layer. Only small fragments of paint and visible underdrawings on the gesso remained, which made it possible to reconstruct the approximate features. Traces of gilded halos were also preserved, leading to the decision to reapply gilding in the areas of loss.

During the restoration, the following work was carried out: – Removal of darkened varnish and drying oil; – Consolidation of the carved wood and paint layer; – Partial regilding of the halos; – Retouching of the garments and landscape at the base of the composition.
